Once your coat is washed and completely dry, how you store it decides what condition you’ll find it in September.
Vacuum storage bags: avoid them
It’s a tempting way to save space. It’s also one of the worst things you can do to a down coat. Down traps warmth by creating insulating air pockets between the feathers. Compress those pockets for five months and they flatten permanently. The coat will look fine, but it will have lost some of its warmth for good.
Instead, use a breathable cotton storage bag, or even a clean pillowcase. The goal is to protect the coat from dust and light, not to suffocate it.
Hang or fold?
Hang your down coat on a wide hanger that properly supports the shoulders. The down stays in its natural position and breathes better during the months of storage, preserving its volume until next season.
For a heavier or more structured coat, fold it neatly and store it flat. The weight of a heavy coat left hanging for months will gradually stretch the shoulder seams.
In both cases, make sure all zippers are fully closed before storing. Zippers, keep them closed protects the teeth and prevents other garments from catching on them.
Where to store your winter coat
The ideal spot is dry, dark, and temperature-stable. The attic and the basement are best avoided as temperature swings and humidity can damage the fill and accelerate wear. A bedroom closet is the most reliable option. A bedroom closet is your best bet. The temperature stays consistent, it’s dry, and light barely gets in.
For moths, a natural cedar sachet in the storage bag is enough. Avoid chemical moth balls as it can damage technical fabrics over time.
When to store it, when to bring it back out
Store your coat when morning temperatures consistently stay above 10°C. In Quebec, that’s typically between mid-April and late May because we all know winter has a habit of showing up uninvited well into April.
Bring your coat back out three to four weeks before you need it. That gives the coat time to air out and recover its loft after months stored. Better to be ready early because in Quebec, it’s always suddenly 3°C on a September morning.
Winter always comes back. You might as well be ready.
